Fishing Tips for Ashurst Lake

How many of you like pike? I'll bet not many considering the damage they do to trout populations. But no matter what your option about pike I bet you would like to catch a 20+ pound gator. I know I would, that just happens to be the reason I fish Ashurst Lake. The state record pike (32lbs 5.6oz) was caught here. You can find good fishing here both from and shore and in a boat. When the winds whip up you should get off the lake though. The whitecaps here can get pretty big. Some of the biggest fish of the year can be caught just as soon as you can fish here in the spring. Feeder creeks are your best bet but any sort of shallow structure can be a good bet. Spoons and spinners work well for both pike and trout. If you are looking for pike specifically your best bet is to fish with dead bait under a bobber or on the bottom. Swim baits shaped and colored like trout will also work just not as well. The summer the fishing is ok but all of the big fish move to deep water where they are hard to get at. You can catch fish in the shallows really early or at night though. Swimbaits, jerkbaits, soft plastics, jigs, crankbaits, and live bait work well for both species but you need to adjust the size when going from one to another. In fall the fish will move shallow again as the water gets colder. The a mix of spring and summer tactics will work well at first switching over to spring tactics as we move into late fall. You can ice fish here but it’s hard because of ice conditions and snow drifts blocking the roads. Good luck fishing!
