China Creek - Alberni Inlet

Port Alberni is self-proclaimed as the Salmon Capital of the world. Why? A large run of sockeye salmon enters the Port Alberni Inlet during June and July. All summer, chinook and coho are available for the catching. One odd years, the pink salmon run floods the inlet. Finally, come August and September, a large run of sizeable (think 30 pounds plus) chinook come through the waters of the Port Alberni Inlet. It's a salmon fisherman's heaven. In the last week of June and first two weeks of July sockeye fishing is at its best. It is no uncommon to hook 15-30 sockeye per morning! The Chinook salmon return in the month of August and bring thrilling action, large schools return to give fishermen an opportunity to hook into a big one. One of the biggest perks about the Port Alberni Inlet is the sheltered nature of the inlet, making it a much kinder spot to fish than the outlying Barclay Sound. Each species of salmon takes different tactics to target. Sockeye respond well to a pink or red hoochie, trolled behind a flasher, though you'll want to check in with the Port Alberni bait shops for assurance. For Chinook, trolling bait or spoons are likely the best options. Again though, it will be best to check in with the local shops. The local shops can also give details for depth, though you'll typically want to stay higher for Sockeye, Pink and Coho, and aim deeper for the larger Chinook.
