Kenai River Fishing Tips

  2/8/2012 2:10 PM

Is there any river in Alaska more famous that the Kenai? Its name is synonymous with huge salmon and Alaska. In fact the world record king salmon (97lbs 4oz) was caught here and the river host the biggest salmon run in the US (at least it did as I am writing this). It is because of that and the fact that it is relatively easy to get to, that so many people vacation here every year. If you want solitude, fish somewhere else. If you want big fish stay right here. It all starts in May with kings and continues through the fall. A few species stand out above the rest; the kings, of course, start it and crest in June before an even larger amount of fish enters the river. Another specie that stands out is the sockeye salmon. Even though the run only lasts about 1 week you can still catch tons of fish; as many as 20,000 different fish enter the river every day. It’s true that the salmon runs are absolute amazing but don’t let that make you forget the rainbows and dolly varden that live in the river year round. The trout grow really fat every year on the spawn of the salmon as well as the dead parents. That’s not to say that the height of the salmon run is the best time for rainbows. Most people who fish for rainbows avoid the salmon run (and all its people) and fish in late fall and winter. When you are fishing for rainbows {or any other specie) make sure you know what the regulations are before you go. It will save you from a heap of trouble. As a final note I recommend you hire a guide so you don’t spend your whole vacation trying to figure out where the fish are and what they are biting on. You can let your guide do that and just sit back and. Catch fish after fish. Good luck fishing!
