Spinnerbaits early and sight fishing up in the day will produce good catches of largemouth. Spotted bass are schooling in droves in the mouths of creeks and on long points and later this month will also be found spawning on the ends of points and rock walls. A Lucky Craft Sammy is the ticket to the schoolers, and shaky-head finesse worms will take the spawners you can’t even see that stay out deep throughout the lake.

Largemouths are still readily available in the pockets of the bigger creeks. Early morning spinnerbaits fished around fallen timber and boat ramps are the best bets for Smith Lake largemouths this time of year. The spotted bass bite for January is prime. Spots are suspended, and a well-placed jigging spoon can put huge limits and numbers in the boat quickly and easily.

Smith Lake is known to be the best striper lake in America. Clear water with extreme depths characterize this lake. The cold deep water hold the hold stripped bass. Fisherman like to use shad tightlined in the deep for the biggest stripers. Free lining baitfish works great also. Good luck!
