Fishermen have had some pretty good luck using walking topwater baits around shallow piers and wood structure at daylight, but it gets a lot tougher once the sun gets up.

The spots are bedding in the gravel flats and on points that have a lot of gravel. Try throwing big crankbaits like the Strike King 6XD and dragging it across the points and getting a few bedding fish to hit it.

Some are catching bass slowly fishing finesse worms as deep as 25 feet. Bass are trying to move up, and on some days they are being found on secondary points. Bigger spots have come from those secondary points on watermelon-colored shaky heads worms. Largemouths are in the same areas, but they are on brush and wood cover.

Lots of bass are being caught on small crankbaits around shallow wood. Brown/orange Rat-L-Traps combinations are also catching good fish in the backs of cuts. Some good bass also being caught 18 to 20 feet deep on rock formations.

Bass are hitting jerkbaits and crankbaits on main-lake and secondary rocky points, and if the bass aren’t aggressive, slow down with jig-head worms or finesse-style Texas rigs on rocks and brushpiles fished slow.

Post-spawn on Lake Martin

  5/15/2012 7:00 PM

The spawn is over and the females are on the hunt. They are weak and in search of easy prey. So they go to the shallows. You will find most fish in 1-5 feet of water this time of year trying to make up from lost feeding while spawning. Keep a look-out for schooling bass in pockets and on points. Lipless crankbaits and topwater lures are the best for these schooling bass. Try all different colors and sizes until you find the right one. If you see a floating baitfish after the school has passed through, go look at it and try to match it. As always look for downed trees and stumps mid-day for bass in the shade. Jigs with crawfish trailers are the best for big bass in these trees. Bounce a square bill crankbait off the stumps for reaction strikes from active bass. Good luck!
