mckay lake

nice lake to fish but every time I fish there I take as many fish as I can before the Mexican and Asian start to fish here. I will kill the small bass so there will be no more fish left. I'm really great friends with Tight Line, he was the one that though me. he told me not to let people know but I feel guilty, but I still do it cause he say he will kick my A$$ if I tell. I'm moving so I'm letting people know.

Good fishing at McKay Lake

This is a great lake to fish.....I don't really know what the complaints are about the poaching.....there areclearly no poaching when ever I'm there......I believe that all large mouth bass are suppose to be release emidiatley...but the fishes that I've been seeing kept by people in a big amount are remember first before saying that people are poaching crappies bagg and possesions are 20 fishes per person.....and plus there is a no size limit on these fishes at mckay......also these fishes are harder to catch through out there year because they migrate to deeper don't go thinking its beeing over fished.....I fish at mckay a lot and these fishes are there one day and they're gone the next day.....

Fishing at mckay is excelent.....people got to study the lake and its fishes to catch them.....there is no poaching happening here at mckay.....I'm asian and we do not keep any large mouth because they are not good eating.......and large mouth are suppose to be release back to the water emidiatley....but what's beeing kept are crappies and there's no size limit to rhem but a possesion limit of 20 per person......also I can guarentee that that amount is very hard to catch as those fishes are either there or please people be kind and do some sturdy first before you start to acuse people cuz in the end you're only going to make yourself look bad

Illegal Fishing

When I moved down the street from McKay lake a few years ago I was ecstatic to be so close to fishing and I used to catch a decent amount of bass there. I'm sad to say that the fishing has gone dry and like another post it's because if the poaching going on. The same people are routinely fishing here and taking fish like it's their only way to eat. It's like a commercial fishing operation. They have traps set up and multiple poles and take absolutely everything they catch. It's a shame and the city of Westminster does nothing about it.
Species Caught: Largemouth Bass

Mckay has been destroyed

Mckay lake has a very large Hispanic and Asian population living close by (not being racist, just speaking the truth as it is fact that these ethnicity aren't prone to following state wildlife guidelines). This has resulted in a complete disregard in state wildlife laws. On more than 10 different fishing trips to this lake I watched as large families pulled and kept over 20-30+ fish each time all of which were considerably below state limits. Also, there is a LOT of Cray fish traps being set all along the shores, decimating the crawdad population. This used to be a very well stocked lake, of which you could pull some decent sized bass from. There is truly not much left here. Don't waste your time.

Not much biting

I have noticed a few people catching fish way below the state size limits and keeping them in large numbers. I hope this hasn't majorly impacted the population but I am beginning to think it has.

Year round tips

On McKay Lake only artificial lures may be used, however scented artificals may be used if they are 1.5 inches or longer. Also float tubes are allowed. now to fishing, to catch Largemouth Bass pre spawn look in 12 ft of water or less off of possible spawning areas. Use lighter jigs, streamers, small plugs or small inline spinners. Post spawn follow the basses movement into deeper water (20+ feet), use lures similar to pre spawn but larger, also flutter spoons will be productive. As fall comes around use surface presentations in addition to summer tactics. In winter use slower presentations in mid deep water such as jigging plugs, streamers on a ice rod and skirted jigs. To catch crappie use similar locations and methods but note the fish spawn earlier, the fish remain shallower, Crappie take smaller baits and lastly they are timid. To catch catfish pre spawn follow the fish as they move to shallower spawning locations. Use plugs ran on the bottom, large jigs and bottom bouncers or a flutter spoon worked slowly on the bottom. Track the fish as they move deeper post spawn and pitch them similar lures as to pre spawn. In fall and winter look in mid shallow to deeper locations and use tactics similar to summer, jigging plugs might be used in winter, also keep in mind year round scent is key. Use similar tactics for carp but look shallower. Enjoy fishing.
