In the shallow flats, they are running shad up on the gravel bars. Topwater fishing is really good with a Spook Jr. and a Yum Houdini Shad in turtle color. When they move out a little deeper as the sun gets up, I’m catching them on a No. 7 or No. 8 Fat Free Shad.

This year water is at full pool and the bushes should be the ticket. Electric red plastic worms and shaky heads are working really good on these shallow fish now. Green-pumpkin colored 1/4-oz. Brush Hogs flipped into the bushes and shallow fallen timber should be deadly on these largemouth in the next few weeks. Black/blue jigs with a black Strike King trailer should also work pretty good.

Jigs, spinnerbaits and small crankbaits cast into eddies have been taking bass off and on. The mouths of industrial canals have been holding numbers of bass trying to find a place out of the current.

Try a chartreuse 1/2-oz. War Eagle spinnerbait with a white skirt and double willowleaf blades, and that helps the fish find the bait in the heavily stained water. Also try a shallow-running Bandit crankbait in chartreuse/black or chartreuse/brown colors.

Shaky-head worms are catching about all of these small bass that you want. The bigger bass are being caught on the lower end on shaky heads and Alabama Rigs on the edge of bluffs in 25 to 30 feet of water.
