Fishing Tips for possibly the best trout water in the US
12/15/2011 1:40 PM
Who wants to fish in the river that Trout Unlimited called one of the best if not the best trout water in the whole US? I know I do. To think it all started as an accident. WAY back when the White River was an excellent smallmouth stream. Then the demand for flood control and power grew so the Corp of Engineers built lots of big dams all around the south. The rivers backed up behind those dams. Now what happens when water is really deep? If you guessed it gets cold you are right. Now what would happen when the dam draws that cold water into the river? If you guessed perfect trout you are right. The White River is even better than its counterparts. Why? I don't know? Now you might ask how do I know that the White River is better than the other rivers if I don't know why? The average growth here is 5 to 7 inches a YEAR. How many other rivers can say that? Not many. Because of that there are millions of trout stocked in the river on top of the thousands of fished spawned every year. As for fishing tips; when none of the generators are working you can wade and the best fishing technique is nymphing. When half of the generators are running you can forget about wading if you like living. The best technique during those conditions is to fish midstream structure, like shoals. When all the generators are on I would recommend you hire a guide until you know what you are doing and use weighted streamers in a chuck and duck kind of fishing pattern. One last thing; when fishing here you can forget the tape measure. The fish round these parts are measured with scales. Good luck fishing.
