Mark Twain Lake attracts fishermen, boaters, campers, and hunters to relax and enjoy the beauty and peacefulness that surrounds the lake. Many visitors to the area tour the birthplace of the world-famous humorist and writer Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) in the nearby state park, or tour the shops and relive the tales of Mark Twain in the nearby town of Hannibal. The John F. Spalding Recreation Area at Mark Twain Lake provides a boat ramp, restroom, three picnic shelters, picnic areas, pay phone, playground, showerhouse, and swimming beach. Alerts and Important Information Reservation must be made at least 2 days prior to arrival. The John F.Spalding Recreation Area is open for day use only. The boat ramp is available year around and the day use area is available April 16, 2009 to October 4, 2010 and closes at dusk daily. The day use area is open 8 am - 6 pm during April 16, 2010 to May 1, 2010 and September 6, 2010 to October 4, 2010. The day use area is open 8 am-10pm during May 2, 2010 to September 6, 2010. A Day Use fee is charged for the use of the swimming beach and boat ramp. A Day Use Fee Annual Pass is available from the Mark Twain Lake Project Office, which is open year round. The group shelter reservation fee is $30.00 The high water boat ramp is open when the lake elevation is above 625 msl. Alcohol is prohibited on the swimming beach and the lower picnic area. Alcohol is permitted in the shelters and picnic areas.
