About the Campground
The Middle Ridge Cabin is located on Wrangell Island, and is the second young growth log cabin on the Tongass National Forest. Unlike most remotely located cabins on the Tongass, the Middle Ridge Cabin is accessible by road from the community of Wrangell, Alaska. When the road is inaccessible to vehicles due to snow, access to the site is by snow machine or ATV. This recently completed rustic 16' x 20' log cbin with a full loft is constructed of 35-40 year old young growth spruce logs harvested in upper Starrigavan Valley near Sitka, Alaska. The logs were hand scribed and joined together by students through a cabin building class offered at the University of Alaska SE in Sitka during May 2009. The logs were then shipped to Wrangell and reassembled at the Middle Ridge Cabin site in September 2009. When the road is not snow-covered, the site is fully ADA accessible. The cabin itself is ADA accessible, except access to the cabin loft. Nearby opportunities include recreational driving by vehicle or ATV, and snow machining in winter months. The cabin overlooks a small lake. An access trail to the lake is in the planning stages, with a moderate level of difficulty to access the lake shore. Summer opportunities include berry picking, exploring the expansive muskeg, mountain bike riding on the road system, and swimming, small craft boating, and fishing in the lake. Fall opportunities include many of those mentioned above, plus access to high elevation for deer hunting, which begins August 1 in this area. Snow machines (and in the right conditions, possibly ATV's) will be required to access the cabin in winter months. The area surrounding the cabin is already popular for snow machine use due to the extensive muskeg areas that provide for endless riding opportunities. With the cabin now located here to accommodate overnight use, other winter sports such as cross country skiing and snow shoeing opportunities can be realized. Cabin Site and Facilities: Accomodates a maximum of 8 persons. The cabin site (picnic table, firering, woodshed, outhouse, and pathways between all), and the cabin lower bunk, and entrance doors are all ADA compliant. Some interior structures will not be installed until the Spring of 2010 (table, benches, counters, woodbox). When installed, they will meet ADA standards. During the winter of 2009-2010, local volunteers will provide temporary furnishings which may not meet ADA standards. There is no electricity or indoor plumbing. Heat is furnished by a woodstove. The lower level currently includes a top and bottom bunk with no mattresses, small woodstove, and stairway to the loft. The appoximately 3/4 loft offers floor space comfortably for four adults. Natural light flows into the loft via two gable end windows and two skylights. Access to the ADA accessible outhouse is about 40 feet from the front door of the cabin. Bring your own drinking water, cots, sleeping gear, food, cooking utensils and cook stove. refrigeration, and lanterns. Firewood for the wood stove is provided. Due to the distance required to re-stock wood for heating purposes, please bring your own wood if you plan to make extensive use of the outdoor firering. Summer Season Access: The Middle Ridge Cabin is located at approximately 1,600 feet elevation. Snow can block vehicle access as late as early June in some years. When the road is clear of snow, vehicle access is approximately 20 miles from Wrangell, Alaska with the last X miles being gravel with steep grades and tight turns. Access to the cabin requires vehicles with high clearance; the road is not suitable for RV's or trailers. Fall and Winter Access: Drive up ability is limited by snow and ice. Snow can be expected anytime from mid-October on. Access to the cabin during this time requires a snow machine or ATV under favorable snow conditions.
