Location: 106 miles SE of St. Maries, ID near Mallard-Larkins Pioneer Area Attractions: Surveyors Lookout is perched at 6000' elevation on top of Surveyors Ridge. This 30 foot tower overlooks the spectacular Mallard- Larkins Pioneer Area, Snow Peak and the surrounding mountains. Snow Peak, Middle Sister and Mallard Peak Lookouts are still standing and can be seen from Surveyors. Capacity: 4 maximum Availability: July 15 to September 30 (depending on snow levels) (maximum of 5 nights) Altitude: 6000' Remarks: Access via a rugged single-lane road with pullouts. Not recommended for low clearance vehicles. Road may be slick when wet. Facilities: Furnishings include propane refrigerator, cook stove, heater and lights; one twin bed and 2 extra mattress; one cabinet/chest with a few drawers; table, bench and chairs. *Please note: Refrigerator is very small (smaller than a regular-sized cooler). It is undependable, so please bring a cooler and ice as a contingency. There is an outhouse located near the lookout. A spring is located along the road approximately 1.4 miles away. Treat or boil all water before drinking. History: The original pole structure lookout was built in 1931 and was part of a network of Lookouts used to watch for fires in the Upper St. Joe country. The original lookout was replaced with the current treated timber lookout in 1964. Surveyors is on the National Historic Register for Lookouts.

Alerts and Important Information Heat: The heater will only take the chill off the lookout. It does not keep the lookout very warm because there is no insulation. Bring appropriate bedding and clothing for cool/cold weather. Water: There is NO POTABLE (DRINKABLE) WATER at the site. There is a spring and water tank approx. 1.4 miles along the road beyond the turn-off for the lookout. Treat or boil the spring water at least one minute at full boil before drinking. Toilet: An outhouse is located near the lookout. Provide your own toilet paper and please leave it clean. Food Items: Care should be used in food storage, as mice and other rodents may be present. Please seal food in rodent-proof containers (one provided) or coolers and pack out all garbage and food when you leave. Pets: Pets are not allowed in the lookout. Waste Water: Wash water should be strained and all food particles packed out with other trash. Strained water should be poured in a shallow hole, dug away from the lookout. Fill in the hole, compact and cover with pine needles and sticks before leaving. Smoking: Smoking is NOT allowed in lookout. Clean-up: You are responsible for cleaning the lookout and outhouse. Please pack out all trash and food. Please call the district office at 208 245-4517 4 days prior to your arrival to confirm the combination. Cabin can only be reserved up to 180 days in advance.
