About the Campground

Sylvania Wilderness Backcounty Camping is not a physical campground located at one location. The 50 individual sites are located along eight lakes within the Sylvania Wilderness. Camping is allowed only at the designated sites. Reservations, fee payment, registration and viewing of a Leave No Trace video are required prior to camping during the period from May 15 through September 30 annually. This takes place at the Sylvania Entrance Station (Sat. - Thurs.: 8:30-5:00, Friday: 8:30 - 6: 00). The Entrance Station can be reached May 15 through September 30 by calling (906) 358-4404. Twenty-five percent of the campsites are held back to allow for walk in reservations during the summer season, with walk in customers registering at the Entrance Station. Camping is free and open at designated sites outside of the reservation season on a "first come - first served" basis, from October 1st through May 14th. The developed campground at Clark Lake, adjacent to the wilderness, is not reservable. Special rules apply within the Sylvania Wilderness and must be observed by all visitors. Alerts and Important Information Campsites within the Sylvania Wilderness are primitive, a fire ring and a wilderness latrine are provided at all sites. All sites may be accessed by canoe and many by hiking in. Be prepared to portage your canoe. Special regulations apply to Sylvania. These include, but are not limited to the following: All users are required to register. Special fishing regulations apply to Sylvania Lakes (except Crooked Lake). Metal or glass food or beverage containers, including deposit bottles, cans, and Styrofoam may not be taken into the wilderness. Permitted containers are those designed to be used again. Landing on islands from "ice-off" to July 15 is not allowed in order to protect nesting loons. Motorized, mechanized or gas powered vehicles are not allowed anywhere, including portage wheels and bicycles. Wheelchairs are allowed. Some exceptions for electric motors are permitted, contact the Entrance Station for details. A maximum of 6 people per campsite is allowed for any purpose or activity. Fires are allowed only inside a Forest Service fire ring. Reservations must be made at least 3 days in advance. Reservations can only be made up to 6 months in advance. Golden Age and Golden Access Passports are honored at for applied fees at these campsites, as well as the Facility Pass. A $5.00 per day Facility Pass is required for use of the developed facilities within the Sylvania Recreation Area. A Seasonal Pass is available for $20. The Facility Pass includes parking as well as hot showers at the Clark Lake Day Use facility.
