About the Campground

At 7000 feet in elevation, this facility is situated in the timber belt close to the lake shore and looks up at the majestic rocky peaks of the Sierra Nevadas and Desolation Wilderness. The area is well-known for its hiking, wildflowers, and bird life. In a normal snow year, the season generally runs from early July to mid-October. Other opportunities in the area are amphitheater programs, mountain biking, horse camping, four-wheel driving on Barrett Lake Jeep trail (late July), and fishing. Wilderness permits are required for both day hiking (available at the trailhead) and overnight (available at Pacific Ranger Station). Motor boats (including electric motors) are not allowed on this lake, so bring your canoe, raft or waders. A canoe dock makes accessing your canoe easier. A camp attendant is available from 8 am to 4:30 pm. Extra parking is limited. Firewood can be gathered in the area. For local information, call the Eldorado Information Center at 530-644-6048. Renters are encouraged to go to the following website for more details on the facility: http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/eldorado/publications/rog/
