About the Campground

The Bandy Creek Visitor Center is open daily between 8:30 am to 4:00 pm. Altitude: 1560 Feet Blue Heron Campground is open seasonally from April to November and operates on the reservations system from May 1 to October 31. Alum Ford Campground in Kentucky operations year round on a first come, first served basis. Black bears and wildlife frequent the area. Storage regulations for food and garbage are strictly enforced. Hazardous tree area. Limbs may fall at any time. Use caution when selecting a place to camp. Open alcohol is permitted in the campground.

Alerts and Important Information Quarantine Notice: Firewood from the states of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec can not be brought into the national park. The United States Department of Agriculture has quarantined firewood from these states to prevent the spread of highly destructive insects that may be living in the wood. Firewood must be purchased and/or collected from the local vicinity. Black bears and wildlife frequent the area. Storage regulations for food and garbage are strictly enforced. Hazardous tree area. Limbs may fall at any time. Use caution when selecting a place to camp. Check in at campground office upon arrival. Skateboards, scooters, and rollerblades may be ridden in F-loop only. Pets may not be left unattended. Pets must be restrained at all times. Campers are required to clean after pets. Quiet hours are from 10 p.m. until 6 am. No fireworks allowed in campground. Firearms must be broken down and cased. A Tennessee or Kentucky fishing license fishing is required to fish in the main river of the Big South Fork. A permit is needed for backcountry camping but not for day trips.
