Back Creek Fishing

on August 10th

My friend and I were fishing Back Creek from Kayaks in the segment below the 4-H camp. Caught nothing but nice sized Bass from about 7:30 AM until we headed home at 1:30. As well latched on to a nice sized Channel cat that towed me around in my Kayak for a while! Excellent fishing today! Not just good fishing, but beautiful scenery as well; and some healthy fresh fish for the freezer! Used both spinner and artificial minnow baits.

Muskies, Chain Pickerel, in Back Creek

on July 13th

If you really want to catch the big fish in Back Creek, live bait is highly recommended! Minnows,Hellgramites, Crickets, Nightcrawlers, or any kind of "Grasshopper". Bucktails, spinners, etc. will not catch the big ones ! Back Creek from the confluence of the Potomac River to the WV Rt. 9 Bridge Public Access area west of Hedgesville is host to American Eel, Chain Pickerel, Small and Largemouth Bass, Blue Gill, Rock Bass, Channel and Bullhead Catfish, and as of this spring, Muskies ! I have caught 2 this season, of nice size. To get to choice areas, A smaller Canoe or Kayak (preferably) is recommended. As there is a lot of "downfall" in the stream channel from past flooding. Excellent places though to catch lots of Bass,or as in my case a Muskie ! Second one of the year..Didn't have a camera, (wouldn't want to lose it in water !) but it was a beauiful fish ! If you're after the Chain Pickerel, you need to fish around the "weed beds" into the deeper pools. You have to be patient for Chain Pickerels, as it takes a lot of casting with artificial baits to get a strike. I have had lots of luck with live baits, and or "reeling slowly in" with night crawlers. Great stream/river to fish ! Water is clean, and if you care to, you can eat your catch ! I've heard as well from other anglers up stream from the Parks' Gap Bridge upstream to Shanghai public access of them catching both Brook and Rainbow trout. Not just floating to fish, but the scenery is spectacular! Especially in he remote areas. ! Herons, Beaver,Deer, and much more to see. Peaceful and Beautiful. In some places, even with a Kayak though I had to wade through.Felt good cooling off and I got a chance to get some more bait ! Great small river to fish !
