Fishing Tips for the Bighorn River

The Bighorn River; what can you say about it? It is one of the most famous trout rivers in the US. Even people who have never gone trout fishing have heard of it. The strange part is the stretches of the river worth fishing are not actually that long. The best stretch of the river is from the Yellowtail Dam for 13 miles to Bighorn. That is the stretch of the river most people fish. The super good fishing stops there but good fishing can be found in the much less fished stretch from Bighorn to Two Leggins. Summer is the best time to fish here as evidenced by the thousands of anglers that pour into the area during that time. That best flies to use in June are Blue-Winged Olives, Parachute Adams, and the usual nymphs. Little Yellow stones and caddis start to pull their weight in July but fish can still be caught on the other baits you used in June. August is the peak for caddis and Morning Duns also get going then. Lastly the Tricos in September are awesome. Since this water is a tailwater river good fishing can be found in the winter when midge hatches occur. If you are a history buff you might like this river more than most because the Little Bighorn monument is nearby. I am going to guess everyone reading this knows that that is where the Battle of Little Bighorn (AKA Custer’s Last Stand) happened and I am sure you have heard of that battle (and the outcome). If you like hunting the Bighorn has some of the best duck, geese, pheasants, sage grouse, chukar, and huns hunting is the state. Now that’s my idea of a perfect day, spend the morning hours catching huge trout, afternoon exploring the battlefield, and the evening hours hunting for my bird of choice. Good luck fishing (or hunting or exploring history or all three)!
