Fishing Tips for the Bois Brule River

on December 16th

Have you ever had one of those days where you feel like a completely different person at different times? Well, for the Bois Brule it’s always like that; the first 20 miles runs though kettle ponds, bogs, and woods. The river twists and turns as though it is not sure which way to go. The bottom at this point is fills with springs, beds of gravel, and occasional deep holes. Don't forget the fallen trees and undercut banks that make homes for the nice brook trout that make this part of the creek home. In total the river only drops about 100 feet in this section that makes up about 40% of the stream. As you flow downstream a little more the river widens making for easier casting. For the mileage from County Highway S to County Highway B there regulations are you can only keep 3 fish a day. You can have 1 rainbow bigger than 26 inches. Two browns bigger than 15 inches. three brookies at least 10 inches. Lastly no more than 3 salmon no smaller than 12 inches. When you hit the Highway B bridge regs change and become more generous. Just below the Highway 2 Bridge the personality changes big time. It turns from a peaceful little creek to rushing, roaring rapids that speeds through boulders, over ledges, and into choppy pools until it continues on again. This section the favorite of lake run fish anglers. .Speaking of lake run fish all the species found in the creek year round live in the lake as well as salmon. These lake run fish are HUGE! The fish can be found in the river on and off all year depending on how the weather and food availability is. However wither or not they are in the river you have to stop fishing for them on November 15 and you can’t go again until the first Saturday of March. The fishing here is some of the best it has ever been and is only getting better thanks to habitat restoration. Good luck fishing! PS when you are fishing here you are fishing water that is good enough to draw several president attentions such as U.S Grant, Grover Cleveland, Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, and Dwight D Eisenhower.
