Bradshaw River near Bedeque, Prince Edward Island
April 15 2011 was cold and windy with snow squalls. We fished just below Laird's pond near Searltown and caught a total of 8 Brook Trout using worms. The largest fish taken was actually in the pond itself and was 14 inches in size. There is no fish ladder into the pond so the trout above the pond outlet under the road are landlocked.
The fish were typical of upland brookies and rather dark in colour. The stream was moderate in flow rate and very clear. We cooked the kept fish immediately for dinner and the flesh was soft and white, typical of small stream fish. I suspect that the sea run fish will be present latyer. The sea trout are already being caught near Tyne valley. For the epicure, they are far superior.
The Bradshaw drainage seems to be over populated by many small trout. The installation of a fish ladder into the Laird's pond and a bit more fishing pressure would improve the stream. The area is quite underfished but provides a lot of action from small and very hungry brookies.
