Castaic Lake near Val Verde, California
Castaic Lake is home to BIG bass. In fact the state record came from it and 7 of the top 25 biggest bass ever have been caught out of Castaic Lake . Sharing the water with the HUGE bass are lots of nice, stocked trout, good panfish, nice catfish, and good striped bass. The lake is open all year but only from sunrise to sunset, so no night fishing. The exceptions are Christmas Day when everything is closed and the lower lake which is open 24 hours. If you need more lures or bait you can always stop by the bait shop or the mini-mart which are located nearby. There is a nice campground in case you want to go camping. There are two really nice boat launches you can use for $13. If you don’t have a boat you can rent one for $75 per day. The lower lake has a gas motor ban. It is worth noting that The best baits you should use include spinners, soft plastics, crank baits, live bait, dead bait (catfish), jigs, top waters, swim baits, and spoons. Good luck fishing!
P.S It should be noted that the lower lake has a ton of 10lbs+lbs bass in it. They are there because before there was a scale at the boat launch the anglers that caught a big fish and wanted to get it weighted would drive to the mini-mart where they weighted the fish and then, not wanting to drive all the way back to the main lake they would just release the fish in the lower lake. The best time to fish the lower lake is after the trout are stocked. When the trout are stocked the bass go on a crazy feeding spree. Also worth noting is the fact that the bass face a lot of fishing pressure so this is a hard lake to fish so don’t be surprised if you don’t catch anything the first few time you go out.
