Great fishing

on May 18th

The fishing at Donner is great, but check with the California EPA before eating it. Last I heard the recommended consumption is no more than one serving (6-ounce cooked fish per serving) per week of brown trout or lake trout, or up to two servings per week of kokanee. This advice is based on the evaluation of PCBs and mercury levels in these fish.

Donner Lake fishing tips

on November 4th

Donner Lake has really nice trout swimming in it with the main draw being rainbow trout which the DFG makes sure there are plenty of with stocking. That’s the upside. The downside is that during the summer hundreds of people flock to the lake to go camping or water skiing or wind surfing. In fact there are some many pleasure boaters in the summer it’s hard to find enough water that’s not covered by a boat in order to drop a line (not really but still). My recommendation is you try fishing in the spring, fall, or winter. The best baits for when you actually get fishing are spinners, jigs, soft plastics, spoons, spawn sacs, flashers, and crank baits. Good luck fishing!
