Fishing Info for the Gunnisn River

on December 7th

Formed at the confluence of the East and Taylor Rivers at Almont the Gunnison runs west to join the Colorado. The Upper River, above Blue Mountain Reservoir, the trout fishing is excellent for fish that average 16 inches and the wading is easy but the fishing pressure reflects that. The best time/way to fish is by floating down the river in the summer casting all the way. In the fall you can find HUGE brown trout and kokanee salmon running upstream from Blue Mensa. The fishing in the lower river is not as good but the fishing pressure is way lighter. The one spot in the lower river that provides fishing that surpasses the upper river is The Gourge just upstream from where the East Fork enters the river near mile marker 90. There, the fish commonly average upwards of 16 inches. The best time to fish the whole river is in June during the salmon fly hatch. Good Luck
