Fishing Tips for Hat Creek

For more than 20 miles Hat Creek can be found flowing north to where it meets up with Pit River. Really good trout fishing can be found here but not in the whole river. The only section worth fishing is the 3.2 wild trout stretch under Cassel. The first two miles are the perfect spring creek look alike. If you want to fish in the section you have to get close enough (without spooking the fish) that you can see the little seams of micro currents. Then drop a small fly right on top of it. This is not the kind of fishing for someone who’s a klutz (me) or is not very patent (me too). The rest of the run above Baum Lake does not have as many trout in it but the ones found here are bigger. The hatches of midges and caddis here are large. There are also decent hatches of salmon flies, little sister sedges, green drakes, pale morning and evening dues, and tricos. Check at a local bait shop to see what’s hatching at the time you are fishing. There are other places in the creek where a decent put and take trout fishery. If you want you can check on the Wish and Game's website to see just where they stock the fish as well as how many and how big. Good luck fishing!
