Hiwassee Lake Fishing Report near Murphy, North Carolina
Write a Report
I was recently fishing Lake Hiwasee and caught a 20 inch large mouth right from the shore. The lake is full of fish but the limited amount of open shore line makes it hard without a boat. But in the limited boat ramp space of the lake I caught this buety. Unfortunately I only had a measuring tape no scale.

Steep and deep, Hiwassee Lake is known for its blueback herring, which are both a blessing and a curse. The blessing is that they provide the perfect forage for game fish to grow huge (several different state records have been caught here). The curse is that they make finding and catching those gamefish difficult. Instead of relating to a specific, easy to find piece of structure day after day like a particular weedlines, island or point, the fish are constantly moving around following the herring. If you can't find the herring, you aren't going to catch a whole lot. A boat with a depth finder is essential for fishing here. Once you find the herring several different tactics will work to catch the fish including vertical jigging, casting deep diving lures, or drifting live bait around the schools. That is how you catch most of the gamefish in the lake, but if you want to catch the panfish, scarce catfish or largemouth bass you are going to want to focus on fishing the more weedy north end of the reservoir with spinners, soft plastics, weedless lures, and live bait.
