Imperial Dam near Yuma, Arizona
This report is for the Colorado River in between Picacho State Rec Area. This area is known as the Arizona everglades. There are so many different backwaters and side channels for all the fish to grow big. And big they grow. Bass passed 12lbs and catfish up to 90lobs are not unheard of. Don't forget about the rest of the species either which all produce good fishing in their own right. If you want to try for the next state record bass try pitching or flipping Texas rigged soft plastics, live bait, topwaters, weedless spoons, and weedless jigs at the edges of weeds. Early in the year slow rolling spinners near weeds is the best way to catch fish. When a cold front moves through, making the bass go deep, try drop shotting the deep holes. Small swim baits will work too. As a general rule of thumb if the fish are not biting try adding a trailer and fishing slower. The channels connecting backwaters to the main channel are great places to fish frozen anchovies, swimbaits, and white colored crankbaits for striped bass. If you have rods that you want snapped try fishing with corn and dough balls for carp. If you are looking for a state record catfish try fishing the main channel. Try using live fish (bluegills are the best), corn, stink bait, or hot dogs on the bottom after dark. You are going to need really heavy tackle if you plan on catching the big one. If you are looking to catch lots of sunfish try using worms in the backwaters. Tight Lines!
