Kanektok River near Bethel, Alaska
Wow, sometimes that’s all you can say about the fishing in a river. Some of the times that wow can be bad like, wow, I caught no fish whatsoever in a week of fishing. The wow I am talking about right now is the wow you will say when you see your chiropractic bill from catching so many big fish. If that interests you (how could it not) I recommend you keep reading for more info. The upper third of the river is known for its sailfish (grayling) and char. Generally a 5 weight will work well for this kind of fishing. If you want to fish the rest of the river you are going to need a bigger rod (7 or 8) and a bigger net. This is the section of the river that all 5 species of salmon run up, starting in July, to spawn. If you want to fish for a bunch of different salmon species at once I recommend you come up in late August. This is also the section where the rainbows pig out on salmon spawn and dead salmon. As a result of that don’t be surprised to find rainbows that look more like beach balls than footballs. My favorite way to fish the river is to float the whole thing. You can get an air charter service to drop you and your raft off on Pegati Lake and then just work your way downstream. There are no waterfalls or major rapids in your way but it should still take you about a week (if you are fishing right). You can float the river on your own but I recommend you hire a guide because they know where the fish are and the best ways to catch them. Besides they know how to camp out here without being eaten by bears. All and all if you like camping in the middle of nowhere and you like catching lots of big fish I recommend you give the Kanektok River a try sometime. Good luck fishing!
