Lake Chaubunagungamaug near Webster, Massachusetts
Lake Chaubunagungamaug is the shorter of the lake’s names, believe it or not. Its full name is 45 letters long, translated from the Nipmuc language, which is probably why it is known in Webster simply as Webster Lake. Whatever the name of the water, the fishing here is fantastic. Most of the shore line is privately owned, so you are better off with a boat. There is a public launch on the Southeastern shore, and a town launch in the Northeast, at Memorial Beach, which costs $20.00 in the summer to non-residents. The waters north of Memorial Beach are the best for bass, and Chain Pickerel are routinely taken out of the middle and south ponds, where the water is between six and eight feet deep. To find trout, go towards the deeper waters in spring, summer or fall. Ice fishing is fantastic pretty much everywhere during the winter.
