If you are looking for nice largemouth bass, Lake Gaston has what you are looking for. In the spring fish the shallows with jigs, buzzbaits, and soft plastics. In the summer the bass move deeper to the drop offs and points. Jigs, swimbaits, soft plastics, and crankbaits work well. During the mornings, evenings and in the fall the bass can be found shallower again near rocks, boat docks, underwater humps, stumps, weed beds. Spinnerbaits, topwaters, soft plastics, and shallow running crankbaits work well in those spots. The striped bass found in the lake offer good year round fishing. The colder months find the stripers grouped in tight school over the main lake, the warmer months find them spread out over the main lake. Try trolling with deep or shallow running crankbaits, minnowbaits, or spoons. In the spring and winter they move shallower to the points and islands. Crappies and whitefish can be found near the same main lake baitfish schools that the stripers hang out around. Trolling works for them to, you just have to downsize your presentation. In the spring white perch and crappies congregate around shallow cover and can be caught on jigs and live bait. Sunfish can be caught shallow, year round, on small beetle spins and live bait. Fishing the edges, ledges, deep holes, and along the former river channel works well for catfish up to 60lbs. Fish for them with live or dead bait near the bottom. Unlike many lakes in the area Lake Gaston offers walleyes which can be caught by trolling for them with small deep-diving crankbaits or worm harnesses. Drifting or vertical jigging also works. Whatever your preferred method try fishing the deep areas including the river channel, the upstream end of the lake, and under the dam.
