Little Manistee River near Manistee, Michigan
It is true that the Little Manistee River is not very wide. It is also true that the river is not that deep. Lastly it’s true that the fishery here has more to offer than the Big Manistee River in many ways. One of the up sides of the Little Manistee is that it is much smaller, only 40 miles. So you could cover all the water in a few days. One of the nice things about this river is it is possible to wade the whole thing. If you have to leave the river to avoid a fallen tree you will not be trespassing as long as you return to the river right away. If you like brookies you can find good numbers near the headwater all year. If you get lucky you might also find a few big browns near the headwaters. Once you get a little farther down the river the river really starts to heat up. The best time to fish here is during the spring or fall and early winter when the steelheads, brown trout, and salmon (pink, Chinook, and Atlantic) run up from Lake Michigan. You already know the best time to fish the river for lake run fish but if you want to catch the browns, rainbows, and brookies that stay in the creek all year I recommend you try fishing the hex hatch in June. There are other hatches throughout the year but they are not as prevalent as the hex. Don’t forget the terrestrials during the summer. Wither or not you are fishing the runs the best fishing spots are little pools, fallen trees, and undercut banks. Weighted streamers work well for that situation. Lastly because this is a river with salmon there are bunches of special regulations so before you go fishing I recommend you check out what some of them may be. Good luck fishing!
