Fishing Tips for Upper and Lower Lake Mary
by Al W
on March 9th
Upper and Lower Lake Mary both contain some of the best fishing in the state. Northern Pike are really plentiful, their yellow perch are unrivaled, the trout here are so fat that they look like footballs and the yellow bass populations is experiencing a boom. That’s not even mentioning all of the other species found here. The best time to fish here is in the spring and fall when the water is cool and the fish are actively feeding in the shallows. You can catch some decent fish in deep water during the summer (fish can also be found shallow in the morning and late evening) but in between the decreased action and the increased boating pressure (no motor restrictions are the cause of a lot of it) I’d find somewhere else to fish during the heat of summer. The lakes do sometimes freeze over in the winter but the ice almost never gets thick enough to fish on. Considering using bait fish here is banned; spinners, swim baits, spoons, jigs, worms, soft plastics, and any loopholes you can find in the bait fish rule (frozen anchovies and water dogs to name two) work the best as far as baits go. Casting or drifting the shoreline and drop offs work the best in spring. Be sure to focus on feeder creeks, weeds, fallen trees, and rocks. Jigging or trolling the deepest water in summer will work. Casting the drop off areas really early in the morning or late in the evening can also produce fish. Fall has about the same deal fishing wise as spring. Good luck fishing!
