With the runoff and warmer temperatures, there should be plenty of steelhead in the river. Those fly fishing have caught many good fish on egg imitations.
Fishing for the very topmost par5t of the Manistee River

Everyone knows guides have super-secret fishing spots that they don't take any of their clients because the fishing is that good they want to keep if for them self. The Manistee River is one such spot. But not where the river is wide and salmon run up from Lake Michigan. They prefer to fish from the headwater to about the village of Sharon. This section of river has really nice brookies and fair browns. The trout fishing is this section of river is so good that it is included in the top 100 best trout stream in America. The farther the guides go upstream the farther away from everybody. In fact canoes don't start to show up in numbers until Cameron Bridge. Even then the numbers are not that bad. However just downstream from County Route 612 Bridge there is a popular campground. Let’s just say you are going to need to fish in the spring or fall or really early in morning or late at night during the summer. One last run to point out before the fishing starts to decline is from the M 72 Bridge to the Civilian Conservation Corps Bridge. The fishing season for the river is from the last Saturday in April through September 30. As far as hatches mayflies, caddis, and stoneflies all have good hatches every year. Good luck fishing!
