It is legal to fish.

  5/28/2014 7:00 AM

It is a california protected constitutional right to fish, and the county can't close a lake that is not used as a water source. If you look at fish and game regulations anything beyond the dam upstream is open. I have a letter from them saying so. Great fishing of typically 5-6lbs bass. Occasional to 22 inches near creek inlet. Civil Code Section 3479. Anything which is injurious to health, including, but not limited to, the illegal sale of controlled substances, or is indecent or offensive to the senses, or an obstruction to the free use of property, so as to interfere with the comfortable enjoyment of life or property, or unlawfully obstructs the free passage or use, in the customary manner, of any navigable lake, or river, bay, stream, canal, or basin, or any public park, square, street, or highway, is a nuisance.

It is illegal

  11/2/2013 7:00 AM

The lake has been closed for many years. The lake at one time was alot larger. The slots cut in the dam to minimize pressure. In a good rain the water flows over the face instead of the spillway. There are trout, bass, bluegill, red ears, crappie, but never seen catfish. The lake is very shallow with trees and obsticles making shore fishing difficult. The Lake is illegal with tresspassing, illegal parking ,and fishing fines. Below the dam is a extra 2500 dollar fine and being named a poacher.

Weight: 5lbs and 9oz., Length: 22in.

Matilija Dam targeted for destruction

  11/11/2012 7:00 AM

Matilija Dam has long been the center of controversy. Recently the discussion around the dam has ignited a strong call for its destruction. The latest prank is indicative of that (see scissors photo below). Destruction of the 200-foot dam has several additional complications including how to address 47 years of built up silt sediment from the dam. Either way this fishery is certain to change if and when the dam is destroyed.

Red ears are everywhere at Matilija Dam

  10/20/2012 10:30 AM

The first hour I was there fished a lot of 5"-6" plastics and got 3 largemouth about #2. Nothing after that. But I did end up with a lot of red ears off night crawlers. I think if you are taking someone out to catch fish the dam is a good spot but I'm not to sure about the bass. Does anyone know if there are catfish in there??
