Passaic River near Jersey City, New Jersey
Time is an amazing thing. It was just a few years ago that the Passaic River was one of the top 10 most polluted rivers in the US. Now the stretch near Jockey Hollow in Mendham the water quality is so much better now it is in part of the Wild Tout Program. As you might guess the trout fishing in this part of the river is good. You can only use artificial lures here. Therefore tiny spinners, streamers, nymphs, small crankbaits, live bait (minnows, corn, salmon eggs), and tiny spoons work the best.
The river below Route 202 until the Dundee Lake section in Patterson is home to leftover trout but smallmouth and largemouth bass take over center stage. Artificial lures such as spinnerbaits, soft plastics, topwaters, and crankbaits work the best.
The entire river so far has been home to the best pike in the whole river. Big spoons, jerkbaits, swimbaits, topwaters, and crankbaits are really good pike baits but live fish (dead fish work the best in late fall, early spring, and winter) are the best way to catch pike in the whole river.
The heart of Passaic County until you get well into Essex County holds carp and catfish that also provide lots of entertainment to anglers. For catfish try using worms and stinkbait on the bottom after dark. Corn and dough balls also fished on the bottom after dark works very well for carp.
From Dundee Lake down to Newark Bay you will find carp, herring, and stripers. You might want to pass up the striper run here though in favor of somewhere better. Most of the stripers here are way below average. If you still want to fish for them try trailing your bait along the bottom.
