Rough, but Good Day

on July 29th

Returned to this stream after three years. Parked at the lower campground and went upstream to the upper camping areas. It was a lot of bushwacking between places to cast, but I managed to catch and release 9 cutthroats over about 5 1/2 hours of fishing. There are several pullout and dispersed camping areas along the way, that, given the many beer cans I saw, probably get fished pretty regularly on the weekends. Still, I there are fish to be caught just a short walk away from these more open, casting friendly areas. There is one tract of private property through here which is posted in one small section. Beyond, a last log cabin, where the fences end and the stream runs well below and west of the road is the best section. Below where I parked, the stream is smaller with a lot vegetation, still, there could be fish to be caught there as well.

Rio Trampas

on June 20th

Most of the stream above the last campground is inaccessible due to brush, downfall, the very narrow, steep sided canyon, and the fact that it's mostly and whitewater cascade at this time of year.Right before the trail crosses the stream for the first time,it levels out a bit and a few fish can be seen, although not easily cast to or caught. We didn't make it to the Trampas Lakes, which have cutthroats. At the Trampas campground at the trailhead, there are some nice pools and places to cast. I was using elk hair caddis probably size 14 or 12. I hooked and lost three fish, before I finally brought a nice cutthroat to hand. Below the campground there a few places that are clear enough for fishing for the next few miles, but much of stream is heavily covered with a dense growth of willows. I was using a 4 weight fly rod, with a 5x or 6x tippet.Single click fly reel. I only fished for about an hour and a half. Probably could've caught a few more if I'd had more time and covered a little more ground. I suspect this area gets hammered on the weekends, but this was Tuesday. I don't know if there are other species this stream.
