Riviere Welland

on October 15th

Great spot to troll. Troll southward up the river using some larvae baits and a lightweight rod with a fluorocarbon line. It will be a slow troll up river, keep it around 2 - 3mph. Fool proof and spectacular way to snag a salmon is cast sideways off your boat, allow your fly to fall back behind the boat, let it lead out for 50 feet or so and set it. Let your bait sit for a few seconds as if it has just "died" then begin reeling it in. "Dead fly, set and follow" is the term we've given it. The salmon follow after the sit and reel, then pop up at the bait from underneath, launching themselves into the air. A fluorocarbon line is key to keep the stealth aspect. Soft tip rods are a must as well, once the salmon hits, with a hard tip they will feel the hook about to set and attempt to spit the bait -- with a soft tip they won't notice until it is to heavily set.
