Savage River near Westernport, Maryland
When the dam was built in 1952 forming Savage River Reservoir the DNR did not think much of it. But since the dam draws from the cool deep water of the reservoir a few trout migrated up from the North Potomac and decided to set up under the dam unknown to the DNR. Let’s just say the DNR was surprised to find a naturally reproducing brook trout population, nice brown trout, and a few rainbow trout where there weren’t supposed to be any trout. The river upstream of the dam is stocked heavily by the DNR so you can find good fishing there too. No matter how the trout got there today it is a good enough of a trout fishery to be listed in the top 100 trout streams in the US. If you are interested in fishing here you will be pleased to find out that access is easy because a road fallows the river the whole way. It should be noted that the whole river is catch and release only (as of me writing this) and part is flies only and the rest is artificial only. If you wish to wade here a wading stick is a must because there are some pools that are tricky during low water levels. Another necessity for wading is studded waders because the bottom is covered with slippery algae. Even though you would think the big fish (did I mention the brook trout and brown trout here can grow big enough to make some anglers pee in their waders? I am not kidding) would hang out in the really deep pools but more and bigger ones prefer to hang out in the smaller pockets just upstream or just downstream from the main pool. The best times to fish here are April into June and again after October 1st. Good luck fishing!
