Fishing Tips for the South Platte River
by Chase Fink
on December 8th
One of the most famous fisheries n all of Colorado the South Platte can get crowed at times but the fish continue to flourish, in fact, in some stretches like the one between Spinney Mountain Reservoir and Elevenmile Reservoir, the fish are measured in pounds not inches. The downside to fishing here is, since the fish see so many anglers, they can be almost freaky smart so you can't just use the same techniques as everyone else, you have to think outside of the box and make sure you are using that sets you apart from the crowd. Near the beginning of the river, before the two forks meet, the water is small and the fish are sized accordingly, the only draw to fishing this section is the adventure and lack of other people. The fishing first starts to get really good in the 5 miles between the joining of the forks and Spinney Mountain Reservoir. The best time to fish this stretch and the one above Elevenmile Reservoir is in the fall when the fish are running up the river, you can catch some monsters then! Downstream from there the fishing is really good right below the outlet of Elevenmile but it slows down to a put and take fishery for medium downstream from there. The fishing picks up again above Cheeseman Lake. Below the outlet of the lake the access is difficult but the fishing makes up for it, trust me. It takes skill to effectively fish the famous Cheesman Canyon and crowding can be an issue but the fish average an amazing 17 inches in this part of the river. The fishing is pretty much about average the rest of the way downstream except for one stretch in the Waterton Canyon where the fishing is really good. Good Luck!
