Spirit Lake near Arnolds Park, Iowa
Largemouth Bass: Bass can be found near/in the weeds almost all year long. As the water starts warming up in early summer the fish will begin to move deeper but they will still usually be found near weeds. That’s not to say a cast or two in another direction might not work when the fishing is slow. Consider fishing with spinnerbaits, topwaters, weedless soft plastic, crankbaits, live shiners, and weedless jigs.
Bullhead: The bullhead fishing here is above average but it’s just as easy to catch them here as anywhere else; try fishing with a worm, stink bait, or dead fish on the bottom after dark.
Northern Pike: If you can find schools of baitfish you will almost always find active pike hanging around. If you are having difficulty finding schools fishing weed edges, drop offs, inlets, and main lake structure is a good way to catch fish too. Spoons, minnowbaits, live bait, swimbaits, and jerkbaits work the best.
Smallmouth Bass: Inlets, rip-rap, rock piles, weed edges, and fallen trees will all hold fish at some point during the year. Try fishing with crawfish imitators, live baitfish, crankbaits, swimbaits, and jigs tipped with soft plastics or live bait.
White Bass: In the spring white bass can be found shallow in the inlets spawning where they can be caught on crankbaits, spinners, live bait, and jigs tipped with soft plastics or live bait. The rest of the year fishing the main lake with crankbaits, Zip Lures, and spoons will work the best
Yellow Perch: In the spring the perch can be found in shallow bays near fallen trees, weeds, and inlets. The rest of the year they like to cruise the weedlines and mudflats.
