Waco Lake near Waco, Texas
I have a ton of tips for Lake Waco so I am going to take it one species at a time. LAGREMOUTH BASS: The bass are found in good numbers and sizes here. If you are fishing here during the spawn you will find tons of bass near the backs of creeks and in coves that are protected from the north wind. The best baits for this kind of situation are white or chartreuse spinners and black/blue or black/chartreuse jig and pork combinations. In the summer the bass can be found near windblown main lake points and flats near the main lake channel. Also good are Flatrock and Hog creeks. The best baits for this kind of fishing are crankbaits, topwaters, spinners, swim baits, and jigs. CRAPPIES: If you though the largemouth bass found here are good they ain’t got nothing on the crappies. The best time for the crappies is the spring when they spawn in coves that are protected from the north winds and flats near inlets. The best “spot within a spot” are fallen trees, brush, and weeds. After the huge spring run the fishing becomes much harder and most people forget about the crappies until next year. CATFISH: The best catfishing happens in the spring and early summer when the fish are actively hunting prey near the inlets. The rest of the year the main lake points, rocks, humps, and flats are the best spots. Your best bet for catching a fish in any of these spots is to fish after dark with shrimp, stinkbait, live fish, dead fish, and worms. WHITE BASS: If you want to catch a lot of white bass your best bet is to fish the rivers in the spring during the famous spawning run where anglers catch 1000s of fish on jigs, spinners, live bait, and Zip Lures. The rest of the year troll the main lake with crankbaits, spinners, and Zip Lures. SUNFISH: Try fishing the fallen trees, rocks, weeds, and inlets with live bait year round. Good luck fishing!
