West Branch Penobscot River near Medway, Maine
The best river in all of Maine for landlocked salmon; that may be a pretty presumptuous statement but, according to all the people that flock here every year to try their hands at catching 5, 10, 20 fish a day, it’s a true one. In the spring when the flood gates of the Ripogenus Dam (by the way the water that is backed up behind the dam is a really good spot to fish to but I am talking about the best fishing in the river which is below the dam) are open and later in the summer when the McKay Station is working is the best time to go fishing here. Why; because thousands of smelt are flushed from the reservoir into the river below. When you add that to the millions of smelt that migrate up from the Pemadumcook/Ambajejus lake systum you have the perfect recipe for tons of fat fish. As far as lures or flies you should use you have to use smelt pattered baits. It is a good idea to stop at a bait shop or hire guide if you want up to the day information. Good luck fishing!
