Fishing Info for the White River

Born on the flank of Battell Mountain the White River is known for its nice brown trout, brook trout, and rainbow trout. In fact it is such a good stream Trout Unlimited listed it in their top 100 trout streams. If that interests you keep reading. In its upper reaches the White River is very scenic and does not receive much fishing pressure. You can catch tons nice of brook trout and rainbow trout by fishing the plunge pools. Beware! Fishing the upper reaches is only for anglers willing to fish with tight lines, short, precise casts, and hiding behind bolder lest you spook the trout. From Granville to Stockbridge you can find lots of above average brook and rainbow trout in almost every bend that has an undercut bank. Be warned there is about a quarter mile between each bend so you will have to do some walking. Because of that not many anglers fish this section so this is a good bet during the height of the tourist season. Once the river hits Stockbridge it picks up the Tweed River and brook trout become rare but the rainbow trout become more prevalent; this lasts until Riverside where the river starts to head northeast. At which point it passes through a small narrows before widening out and slowing down. By now the river has become really popular so artificial and catch and release for trout under 18 inches come into effect for the 3 mile in between Lily’s brook and Cleveland Brook; after that the river flows on unchanged for a bit. From Bethel to Sharon the river widens and becomes much deeper. In fact you might want to ditch the waders altogether and go with a drift boat. If you want to wade try the Third Branch, Second Branch, and First Branch. Each of these offers good fishing for brown trout and rainbow trout and less people than the main river. Also all of them are crossed by covered bridges which make cool photo ops. The rest of the mileage of the white river is known for being open, shallow in spots, and deeper holes that offer 3-6lbs brown trout and fantastic smallmouth bass. Mid to late September is the best time of the year to fish the White both in terms of fishing quality and lack of people. Good luck fishing!
