The stream has many limerock areas and associated swamps. Water levels fluctuate except in Lake Rousseau and the area just above the influence of Rainbow River. Try live minnows around the rocks for spots and crappie.

Aggressively fished topwater baits fished at dawn and dusk hours will continue to be productive means for bass. Bluegill, warmouth, and redear sunfish along with those channel catfish will take baits fished on the bottom. Targeting bluegill and other panfish with live bait close to vegetative mats is a standard practice in this system.
Wide and Shallow - Bream and Bass

The headwaters of this river are about 20 miles west of Disney World, and the river stretches across Hernando, Polk, Lake, and Sumter counties. The dark water of this river is due to cypress tree stumps and decaying vegetation beneath the surface. You'll find a lot of migratory birds around this river and a ton of wildlife along the banks.
Since the river is wide and fairly shallow, dense vegetation attracts a variety of fish. Largemouth bass and bream are common catches here. The river becomes narrow as water levels become lower each year. Flyfishers should try out smaller poppers and hang out near the cypress roots and logjams for the best luck. Additionally, some parts of the river are hard to access, and a canoe or kayak can help you get into some of the shallower, weedier areas.
The further downstream you get, the deeper the water, and nearby large structures such as bridges you will start to see bluegill and other structure-lovers. Beware -- there are no boat launches directly on Withlacoochee River, so you'll have to launch at ramps in nearby crossings such as Lake Lindsey Road and Outlet Crossing.
Species Caught: Largemouth Bass
