Let me start by introducing Mystery Tackle Box. It’s a service that will send a box of fishing lures and baits to your door every month. Once a month, subscribers will find on their doorsteps a box of handpicked, tested, and vetted fishing products. It’s kind of like Christmas, but it’s all about fishing. It’s generally a mix of new products, exclusive products, and top performing products.
New Fishing Products (every month)
If you’re a gear head like me, you’re constantly on the lookup for new tackle and equipment that will make you more efficient, more comfortable, and that will produce better results on the water. I like discovering new products – leaning how and why they work. It’s fun but it can be overwhelming, and that’s what led me to learn more about Mystery Tackle Box. They are obsessed with fishing lures and baits, and I respect that. And their obsession is a job, one where they are constantly on the lookout for the new and innovative fishing products, and keen to share what works.
Monthly Subscription Boxes
Like anything, you have choices with Mystery Tackle Box. They have a Regular Box which is currently priced at $15/month (shipping is free). In it, subscribers receive about $25 worth of fishing lures and baits, and you can pick the species you fish most:
- Bass (chosen for this review)
- Speckled Trout, Redfish, Snook, Flounder
- Walleye
- Panfish
- Catfish
- Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Brook Trout, Cutthroat Trout
Once you’ve chosen your species, it’s onto a plan where their are options like monthly or less frequent billing. It’s all very straightforward, and easy to navigate. Then onto the final steps of checkout.
They also offer a Mystery Tackle Box Pro subscription, and Gift Boxes (MTB Gift) which I took note for my Dad when his birthday comes around.
Mystery Tackle Box Pro
I fish a lot, and I opted for the Mystery Tackle Box Pro subscription. It gives me the chance to fill my larger tackle box with bass bait and bass lures which have passed the test, all-in-all about $40 worth in value each month for only $25. I went with a 12-month plan because I like to get the best value possible. Most of all, I like getting a little box of fishing goodness o my doorstep each month.
Tackle Box Contents
Now let’s get to the most important part. What was in this particular box:
- LiveTarget Gizzard Shad Swimbait – $9.99 MSRP
- Catch Co. The Hunch – $8.29 MSRP
- Nichols Sledgehammer Swim Jig – $4.99 MSRP
- Lunkerhunt Combat Frog – $9.99 MSRP
- V&M J-Bug – $3.75 MSRP
- Mustad Treble Hooks – $5.49 MSRP
- Lunkerhunt Kraken Popper
- A sticker for my big tackle box
- An inventory card
- Some How To information
Some of these items I had seen before, and one I had used. The Gizzard Shad really impressed me as it’s action in the water was amazingly close to a real shad, and as you can guess, it produced some amazing results, and its proven to hold up to use. The Lunkerhunt Combat Frog is a star performer, bringing in some real lunkers, but it’s not nearly as durable as the Gizzard Shad – still worth every penny. The Mustad Treble Hooks were sharp, and fish stick to this hook like crazy.
All in all I’ve been very pleased with the lures and bait I received. I found some top performers that I may have otherwise overlooked, and it was dropped right at my door so need for me to spend hours at my local shop.
Gift Boxes
This makes for an awfully good gift for a fishermen, one which I’d love to receive (hint, hint). You can make the Pro box into a gift box for 3-, 6-, or 12-months. You can also do the same for with the non-pro version. So for a good gift any fishermen would love you can spend $43.50 (for 3-months) and up. That’s good value, and far better than a pair of socks or pajamas.
