About the Campground
Onion Mountain offers a spectacular view of mountainous Southwest Oregon. At night, the twinkling lights of Grants Pass can be seen in the distance, along with a sky-full of stars. The lookout, originally built in 1924 and replaced in 1952, is 14'x14' and set atop a twelve foot tower. It, along with Dutchman Peak Lookout, served as the "key" lookouts for this portion of the Rogue Valley. It is furnished with a bed and a table and chairs, and features a propane cooking stove, refrigerator, and lanterns. A vault toilet is located near the tower.

Alerts and Important Information
Onion Mountain Lookout will be closed for the 2010 season. The Lookout will be used for fire detection.
Entry to the lookout is by a key. Please call the Wild Rivers Ranger District office at 541-471-6500 4 days prior to your arrival to arrange pick up and drop off of the key. The office is open Monday thru Friday from 7:45 to 4:30, and is closed on weekends and holidays. It is located at the Grants Pass Interagency Office, 2164 NE Spalding Avenue in Grants Pass, Oregon 97526.
There is a 3 day minimum advance window for reservations. The fee is $40 per night and is used for maintenance and renovation of the lookout.
There is no potable water at this site. Visitors must bring plenty of water for drinking, cooking and washing.
Please bring your own garbage bags and clean the facility before you leave. This is a "Pack it in, Pack it out" site.
Please bring sleeping bags/bedding, as well as a flashlight or lantern for emergencies, first aid kit, washcloths and towels, and dish soap.
All Forest Service Cabin Rentals are No Smoking facilities.
Please contact the Ranger District prior to arriving at the cabin/lookout rental to check on any restrictions or conditions, such as fire or road closures, weather or storms, etc., that may affect the quality of your visit.
