THE GOOD: Excellent shade provided by numerous mesquite, sycamore, cottonwood, and oak trees. Each campsite has a metal, 2-door bear locker to keep food safe and provide additional surface area for food prep/storage. Each campsite is equipped with a fire ring/pit, metal lantern stand, and a concrete picnic table. Potable water is plentiful. Roads are passable with even low ground clearance vehicles like minivans.
THE BAD: #1 TRAFFIC...lots of it! The campground is located just west of Sycamore Canyon Academy, a rehab center for teenage boys. The ONLY way into or out of this facility is directly through the middle of the campground. The vehicle traffic is consistent 24/7 and LOUD. Time of day or night made absolutely no difference. In addition to passenger vehicles we observed FedEx vans, large trash trucks, and even a tractor trailer rig. So if you want peace & quiet avoid this campground. #2 COWS...lots of them. The campground has a cattle guard at the entrance but it has silted in and cows easily cross it and enter the campground. Cow pies are everywhere! They invade your campsite at night, eat grass all around your tent, and leave you special "gifts" to clean up in the morning. #3. POOR FACILITIES. The USFS has neglected the pit toilets so badly that they are literally falling apart. The stink is overwhelming at times and can be very apparent at several of the campsites...so choose carefully.
FINAL VERDICT: I won't be visiting this campground again for sure. Too many great alternative places to spend time outdoors without all the traffic, cows, and poor facilities.
