This is the old cabin near the head of Portage Bay, not the new West Point Cabin located at the mouth of the bay. It is accessible by boat or floatplane only. The surrounding terrain is hilly along the eastern shore of Portage Bay, flat and rolling south and west of the Bay, with Portage Mountain rising 3,577 feet in the background. Originally built as an administrative site for Forest Service timber layout crews, the Portage Bay Cabin was converted to a recreation cabin in 1987. It is a single level hunter-style cabin equipped with four single wooden bunks, table, benches, oil space heater, and an outhouse. It has no mattresses, cookstove, or cooking utensils. Cabin users should bring sleeping bags, pads, cookstove, cooking gear, food, and #1 oil for the heater. The nearest water source is a creek 100 feet south of the cabin. For more information about this cabin, call the Petersburg Ranger District at 907-772-3871.
Effective November 17, 2003, reservations for Alaska cabins will be subject to a new policy allowing only one change per reservation. A change in reservation is defined as a modification to the start or end date of the reservation. After one change has been made, if additional changes are desired, the customer must cancel the reservation and at a later time, re-book the new dates. This policy has been established to assure that reservations for cabins are fair and equitable for everyone.
