About the Campground

Spanish Creek Cabin sits at the base of the Lee Metcalf Wilderness south of Bozeman, Montana. It makes an excellent base camp for those wanting to day hike into the Spanish Peaks. Several Forest Service Trails are adjacent to the cabin. Spanish Creek Cabin was built in 1934 and is open year-round. There is no electricity and no running water. Capacity is 4 people. Spanish Creek Cabin has a bunk bed downstairs and 2 beds in the loft. There is a wood cookstove and the Forest Service provides the firewood. Basic cooking supplies are provided. In the summer you can drive to Spanish Creek Cabin. In the winter it is a 3 1/2 ski or snowshoe to the cabin. Price is $30 per night and the cabin can be reserved from 1 to 5 nights. Reservations can be made up to 6 months in advance. Last minute reservations (up to 3 nights in advance) are available by calling or going to the Bozeman Ranger Station (406)522-2520.

Alerts and Important Information The Gallatin National Forest is under a food storage order and requires that "unattended food, refuse, and attractants be stored in hard-sided vehicles, bear-resistant containers, or hung at least 10 feet clear of the ground at all points and 4 feet horizontally from any supporting tree or pole." Any violation of this is punishable by a fine. Burning candles in the cabin is prohibited. Make sure have the lock combination for the cabin door before you go to the cabin. The combination code to the cabin will be included in the Confirmation e-mail or letter. There is a stream near the cabin. Water should be treated. Please bring garbage bags. This facility is a "Pack it in, pack it out," facility. You must ski, snowshoe or snowmobile approximately 3 1/2 miles to access this site in the winter season. You can not drive to this cabin until after 5/16, weather dependent. Cabin Renter must be at least 18 years of age. Maximum group size for using the facility and adjacent area is 15 people. No shooting of firearms within 150 yards of cabin. Horses not allowed within 100 yards of cabin. Pets not recommended. Solid pet wastes must be removed within 100 yards of cabin. Campfires must be contained within the Forest Service provided fire ring adjacent to the facility. No other campfires are authorized. The burning of wood pallets is not authorized. Minimize exposure to Hantavirus: avoid contact with rodents, keep a clean cabin, store food in sealed containers, pack out garbage, and report heavy rodent activity to the Bozeman Ranger Station. Use of cabin for commercial purposes is prohibited. The area adjacent to the Spanish Creek cabin (behind the locked cabin gate) is occasionally used by an outfitter and guide authorized by the Forest Service. Medicine Lake Outfitters sometimes uses the parking area in preparation for horse pack trips into the backcountry. This may occur during early morning hours (and other times) and may include temporary parking of vehicles and horse trailers and the unloading and loading of pack animals. If you feel this may be an interruption to your use of this cabin you may wish to consider using a different recreation cabin.
