About the Campground
The Twelvemile Cabin is a fully accessible cabin located on Twelvemile Inlet. Construction of this cabin was made possible through mitigation funds from Alaska Power and Telephone and the Federal Energy Regulatiory Commission. An accessible gravel trail winds 900 feet to the cabin. The trail is open to foot trail only.
The Twelvemile Cabin sleeps 6 people. It contains a woodstove, table and benches, two beds, counters space and several small shelves. There are also hooks for hanging wet clothes. The outhouse is located approximately 40 feet from the cabin and is fully accessible. A woodshed holds wood for the cabin woodstove. The Prince of Wales Offroad Club, through a partnership with the Forest Service, helps to provide firewood for the cabin. Please use this wood responsibly.br>
There are plenty of places to explore in the Twelvemile area. Twelvemile Creek, which flows into the inlet, has a run of coho, chum, and pink salmon and cutthroat trout, rainbow trout and Dolly Varden char. In the estuary just south of the cabin, one may see sandhill cranes, eagles, wolves, bears and sitka blacktailed deer, along with many other varieties of migratory birds. Across the inlet from the cabin is a view of Twelvemile old growth reserve. This area is managed for old growth characteristics and provides a pristine setting for the cabin viewshed. Twelvemile Inlet has a rich logging history. Remnants of an abandonded camp, log landings and log transfer facilities can be found on the nearby shoreline, but are not visible from the cabin. The Old Frank's natural area is east of the cabin, where visitors may find streams with Cutthroat Trout and Dolly Varden char.
Trails for hiking are an easy drive east from the cabin towards Polk Inlet. Pass Lake Trail is a boardwalk trail through a muskeg. In the spring and summer, this trail is particularly beautiful with all of the wildflowers blooming. Dog Salmon Fish Pass is another trail located about 10 miles from the cabin. It is a popular bear viewing site in August. A system of roads for four-wheel drive enthusiasts can be found about 4 miles south of the cabin on the 2100100 RD. There are deer, black bear, eagles, wolves, beavers and river otters to view in the area. Visitors to the National Forest are responsible for knowing the rules and regulations of the forest. Visitor maps for Prince of Wales Island can be obtained by calling the Forest Service Office in Craig (907) 826-3271.
