The West Point Cabin is located near the mouth of Portage Bay on Kupreanof Island. It is accessible by boat or floatplane only. It is 18 miles by floatplane or 24 miles by boat from Petersburg. The West Point Cabin is a barrier-free, modified A-frame cabin constructed in 1994. It is situated west of West Point, just around the point from Fredrick Sound. The cabin overlooks Portage Bay. The surrounding terrain is flat with mixed spruce and hemlock forest. Large expanses of gravel beach are excellent for beach hiking. The cabin, wooden access walkway, and outhouse are all designed to meet wheelchair access standards. The cabin is equipped with two single wooden bunks, a sleeping loft, table, benches, cooking counter, and a wood stove with a full sized oven. Wood is supplied but not guaranteed. The cabin has a large deck and a submerged wheelchair ramp on the beach. The nearest water source is a small stream 1/2 mile west of the cabin. Wildlife: Black bear, deer, waterfowl, whales in Fredrick Sound. Fish: King salmon (May and June), Coho salmon (August-September), halibut in Fredrick Sound. Effective November 17, 2003, reservations for Alaska cabins will be subject to a new policy allowing only one change per reservation. A change in reservation is defined as a modification to the start or end date of the reservation. After one change has been made, if additional changes are desired, the customer must cancel the reservation and at a later time, re-book the new dates. This policy has been established to assure that reservations for cabins are fair and equitable for everyone.

Alerts and Important Information
This is the "new" West Point cabin near the mouth of Portage Bay, not the "old" Portage Bay cabin east of Stop Island. You may make a reservation for an Alaska Cabin on the day of arrival, or up to 180 days in advance. Maximum length of stay is 7 consecutive days between May and September and 10 consecutive days October through April. The person holding the reservation must be at least 18 years of age, and must be a member of the party using the cabin. Use of this cabin by a commercial operator, such as an outfitter or guide, is NOT allowed. There are no discounts for Golden Age or Golden Access Passports for Alaska cabin rentals. The West Point Cabin does not have cooking utensils or mattresses. Cabin users should bring their own sleeping bags, pads, cooking gear, and food. Wood is supplied but not guaranteed. The wood stove has a full sized oven and may be used for cooking. Follow the instructions posted in the cabin. Poor weather can occasionally delay boat or floatplane travel, and cabin users should be prepared for this. Strong currents and occasional high winds require boats to be anchored well in this location. A mooring buoy is provided at the cabin for this purpose. Boil or treat drinking water before consumption. All garbage and food must be packed out.
