About the Campground

McCart Lookout is a historic L4 lookout located on McCart Peak east of the Bitterrot Valley. The lookout is one room with a bed platform suitable for two people. The lookout can accomidate up to four. The lookout measures 14ft.X14ft. with a 30 inch catwalk around the outside. There is a wood stove for heat. You may have to saw your own wood from down and dead material found nearby. A bowsaw and ax are provided. A two burner propane campstove is provided, but you will have to provide your own propane canisters. Utensils for cooking and eating are provided. Water is not. A coleman lantern is provided. Propane to operate it is not. An outdoor toilet serves the lookout. You will need to bring your own toilet paper. The lookout has been restored to reflect a lookout of the 40"s. This includes the stove, furnature, dishes and other small touches. There is a small corral for two or three head of stock. There is a combination lock on the door of the lookout. Call the Sula Ranger District at (406) 821- 3201 one week prior to your arrival for the current combination.

Alerts and Important Information You must hike approximately 1.5 miles to access this lookout. The hike is moderate. There is no drinking water available or provided. Please bring your own water and propane canisters for the stove and lantern. Please call the Sula Ranger Station for door lock combination on week prior to arrival. (406) 821-3201 Lookout can only be reserved up to 180 days in advance.
