About the Campground

Click here for more cabin information and maps. Salmon Lake is approximately 3/4 mile long and 1/4 mile wide. The lake is ice-free April through October; the head of Silver Bay may freeze mid-November through mid-February. Salmon Lake Cabin is 2 miles from the end of Silver Bay. The cabin is equipped with wooden bunks, table, benches, woodstove for heat, and an outhouse. It has no mattresses or cooking utensils. Cabin users should bring sleeping bags, pads, cookstove, cooking gear, and food. A skiff with oars is provided for cabin users only; bring personal flotation devices. A 2-10 HP longshaft outboard motor (not provided) enhances use of the skiff. For boat or air charters, contact the Sitka Convention and Visitors Bureau at 907-747-5940 or www.Sitka.org. This lake cabin is generally accessible year round by boat to Silver Bay, then walking Salmon Lake-Redoubt Lake Trail to cabin. Mooring buoy for anchorage is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Brown bear frequent the area; rain gear is necessary; firewood can be scarce; cabin is not maintained in winter; pack out all garbage. Boil or treat water before drinking. SETTING: Spruce and hemlock forested mountains 2500 feet in elevation surround the lake. Cabin is 2 miles from the end of Silver Bay. ACTIVITES: Hunting, cutthroat trout and Dolly Varden in the lake, runs of pink salmon and sockeye salmon July-August, coho salmon Aug-Sept, hiking. If boating, plan arrival and departure during high tide, unload gear at east shore at estuary head, then tie up boat at mooring buoy. There are NO discounts for Golden Age and Golden Passports for Alaska cabin rentals. The person holding the reservation must be 18 and must be a member of the party using the cabin. Reservations are restricted to a maximum stay of 7 consecutive nights per party for any one reservation May 1 - September 30 and a maximum stay of 10 consecutive nights per party October 1 - April 30. Effective November 17, 2003, reservations for Alaska cabins will be subject to a new policy allowing only one change per reservation. A change in reservation is defined as a modification to the start or end date of the reservation. After one change has been made, if additional changes are desired, the customer must cancel the reservation and at a later time, re-book the new dates. This policy has been established to assure that reservations for cabins are fair and equitable for everyone.

Alerts and Important Information Reservations can be made on the day of arrival or up to 180 days in advance. Boil or treat lake water before drinking. Pack out all garbage. Occasionally poor weather can result in delayed arrivals or extended stays, and cabin users should be prepared for this. November through early April, the cabin may be inaccessible due to frozen lake surface (floatplanes cannot land). Please contact the local Forest Service Ranger District office for current information prior to making reservations during these periods.
